Halloween At The Sixth Element School

Halloween is an exciting festival – where children dress up in scary costumes with some interesting rituals & customs .
If you’ve been wondering why its celebrated – here are some fun facts from the Sixth Element school & daycare – which has two campuses at South City 1 near Huda metro station & Signature towers and Tata Primanti at Sector 72, just off Tatvam villas   near Golf course extension road, SPR and Sohna road.

Halloween is interestingly the short for ‘Hallows’ Evening’ ; of which “hallows”  means a saint of holy person and therefore Halloween or ‘All Hallows’ Evening which in simple words is ’all saints evening’  – a celebration to remember the departed or the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.

Halloween is similar to the “Sharadh” period in India when we pay homage to our ancestors and the departed.
Halloween is beginning to get popular in India especially in some big city affluent urban areas; is celebrated as their all saints day by Indian Christians – although like Christmas children and from other communities also enjoy…

Its observed in several countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of the All Hallows’ Day. its usually celebrated in countries where “celtic” is spoken – such as Ireland, Scotland, Britain, the US, and some parts of Europe, etc and as a build up to this festival – like many other festivals – Halloween lanterns spring up in communities and shops – besides sale of Halloween costumes ..

It’s a very old festival from the pagan times – from before Christianity came and has pagan roots
Trick or “trade” – this is an interesting custom somewhat similar to our Sharadhs period in India, wherein children go from house to house (dressed up in costumes), asking for treats with the phrase : ‘trick or trade” . The treat given to the children is usually some form of candy or some money !
Bonfires and candles are lit as a part of ritual to mark the end of summer …..and to mark to beginning of Winter !
Other Halloween activities include various forms of households play including carving pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, etc – it’s fun and children lead the way as its largely a small children’s festival
during this period – just like our Sharadh period its customary to abstain from meat with the tradition reflected in eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, fruits & seeds and cakes. Its customary to leave some food outdoors to appease the souls of the departed – as it is believed – that the souls of the departed visit their homes on Halloween !
Given our commitment to experiential learning – we share such fun facts – for helping children enjoy learning @ the Sixth Element School.

The Sixth Element - Gurugram’s Unique Single Section School & Daycare!

At a time when schools pride themselves in terms of scale & size(especially in terms of number of children & tens of sections in each grade/class), usually with a few hundred children in each grade (whew - so many kids & so many sections), the Sixth element formal school & daycare at Tata Primanti is unique as it has plans to run with only 1 section/grade or class(max we will go upto is two sections).

This unusual & unique for Gurgaon aspect, of lower number of students is modelled on the famous “Riverside school, Ahmedabad” to ensure that children in each class get the requisite attention & focus and don’t get lost in the mob of hundreds of children in each grade and tens of sections.

If you were to visit the Sixth Element school at Tata Primanti, you would observe large spacious airy & cool class rooms, spacious corridors and large open areas left both inside the building & outside the building ( lots of playground & play/sitting around areas ), and easy comfortable seating inside the classrooms(without the children getting cramped in rows and rows of theatre like seating) - so that the number of children/class remains modest to around 30 children and number of sections will be ideally 1 or max 2 per class.

As a child first focused school, we believe that this simple approach will help us do justice to each child enrolled, and just like our well known 15 year old reputation of our South City 1 campus, this school will get noticed and appreciated as an absolutely unique quality  & not quantity focused school.

Fact that all Sixth Element schools are:
-  green & eco- friendly
- Leverage experiential learning practices & pedagogy
- Leverage team success via working jointly on projects, rather than just individual excellence
- Inculcate values & ethics
- Good balance of academia, practical hands on project work, extra curricular and sports   activities
- all have daycare integrated in the same campus

Summer is here…. schools are beginning to close down for the 2 hot months ? ….
OMG - isn’t that a lot ?….:-)
can get very boring if the kids don’t remain engaged.
TV and being indoors @ home is not the best option…
Reading books and some physical games are certainly good options…but only if feasible.
For the little ones, especially the pre-primary and primary level kids…engagement in activities and sports  in the mornings and late afternoons/evenings is perhaps a good option to consider (even if its a bit hot outside- after all some sweat & heat is also healthy - as long as our little ones are engaged)..
@ The Sixth Element for over 14 years at Gurgaon - we have been operating activities at our campuses…which have been a hit with children & parents..
Our summer programs are usually a hit !

These are creatively designed, which not just engage the children, but are tremendous from learning stand point, social engagement, confidence building, life skills, too..

Engaging & Eco-Friendly School and Daycare - The Sixth Element

We experience massive change & disruptions across sectors – and so schooling & education particularly for the early years needs to adapt – so as they are growing up they are ready for the massive change around.

https://www.sixthelement.edu.in

The era of rote learning & individual excellence – is over.

·“Team” based learning & excellence is far more important than “individual excellence” – because in practical life,  effectiveness in any organization requires “effective team work”, not “individual brilliance”

·“Phenomenon” or “project” based learning is far more important than the traditional narrow siloed “subject” learning – as in the subject wise traditional approach, the student is often unable to comprehend why I’m learning this ? – and learning remains such a pain, with rote learning of definitions, names of discoverer’s, author’s dates, memorization ?

Phenomenon/project/activity based learning however is radically superior and such a joy of learning & discovery. If for example, we study about “thunderstorms” – the what, why, how, etc becomes a fascinating journey of discovery & learning incorporating various facets & subjects such as geography, science, environment, impact of thunderstorm to society, humans, animals, plants, sociological impacts of a thunderstorm on villages & towns, on urban areas and agriculture, etc, etc – and so when we research, discuss & learn about the various such practical aspects – rather than the siloed subject wise learning … going to school becomes a joy and children look forward to going to the Sixth Element School !

·And the role of the teachers is not to teach, but to facilitate the discovery process and guide, mentor in learning on a fascinating journey

·Climate change is one of the biggest problems facing our planet so @ the Sixth Element we practically demonstrate an eco-friendly practices in a green campus to enable children to become sensitive to sustainable practices so important for our planet’s survival today

·Values and ethics are also important today  …so we at the Sixth element help the children imbibe these practices on the campus and encourage our parent community to reemphasize the same at home.

And if you liked some of the above, do write in to us with more questions, comments & feedback if any and we’ll be glad to further engage with you …. Thanks !

From Team : Sixth Element – the only preschool, nursery, primary school & daycare in the same green eco-friendly campuses in Gurgaon!

Good And Bad Effects Of Television On Children

The role of Television in our kids’ life is much bigger then it seems, whereas a parent you witness many new changes and transformations within your child’s life.

You can witness your child entering into the magical world, created after watching the super-heroes, and that sudden giggle while watching Doraemon, which clearly states that children go through a huge transformation and receive the exposure after watching television.

TELEVISION HOLDS THE POTENTIAL TO BUILD CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY AND EVEN HAS THE POWER TO CHANGE ATTITUDES AND PERSPECTIVE TOWARDS LIFE.

Amid this cool-set of attributes, one venomous feature also lies, which suggest that children after growing can easily be influenced by what they see and hear, especially on television.

Yes, this is a major concern which bugs the parents most, as there are television programs which are educational, but there are few programs which trigger the violent behavior among the kids.

To watch Television or not, has been a moot point for many years, but we need to understand exactly does it take to make this debatable question finding a solution find, thus we are here to help you get a solution through this post, just read ahead…

Positive Effects of Television on Kids
  • Source of Entertainment- Entertainment is an inevitable part of life, and kids get the most polished and refined version of entertainment with TV, helping them to stay engaged, learn new skills, and have fun – all in one package only.
  • Education- The traditional teaching methods are never welcomed by every kid, thus as a parent you can make your kids grow interested via educational programs shown on TV, helping them to learn while having fun.
  • Sports- TV can be a great resource to encourage sports interest among kids, and help them to stay active and healthy.
  • Culture Exposure- With a TV, a kid gets enough of options of learning and exploring the new cultures, that enhance their social learning and development skills.
  • Keeps them engaged- Nothing can beat the kids’ energy level, in such situation a TV is the best resource to relieve their boredom.

Negative Effects of Television on Kids
  • Steals Opportunities- The competition in the outer world is screaming largely about the numerous opportunities to be grasped, but spending too much time on TV make a child lose the precious time which could be spent on more productive tasks.
  • Broken language and Social Skills- The rhythm of language skills when we move in society to meet and interact with people. A TV does not interact child on a psychologically or a personal level.
  • Halts Creativity and Imagination- Indeed the real-world exposure cannot be replaced by TV programs, thus watching TV excessively kids fail to stimulate their minds or come up with fresh ideas on their own.
  • Focus Goes Missing- Spending time on TV only translates the major drawback result for the kids, where they lose their focus to participate in creative and mentally calming activities.
  • Unproductive- When a kid watches TV, they fail to achieve milestones in their academic, social, or emotional lives, while studying with the best nursery school in Gurgaon.
  • Medical problems- Usually kids who spend a LOT of time on TV, are at the risk of developing medical problems.

When to grow concerned?

As a parent, we all have our own set of fears, especially when it comes to handling a child. We don’t want our child to misbehave or turn into an irresponsible individual, thus we try to limit every fact, built around the GOOD parenting standard.

In this run, we put excessively stop on kids and restrict them watching their favorite cartoon shows even. But there is something where we lack in and that, knows WHEN to put a STOP?
  • If a child watches crime drama or horror flicks and has nightmares during bedtimes.
  • A child is spending a significant portion in front of the TV.
  • A child is compromising the reading, studying, learning activities, play, and/or exercise time.
  • Watching unsuitable content such drug, alcohol or unfit programs, which are affecting the emotional behavior.
  • Remember, for the efficient and cognitive development of your child, you must develop positive life skills and must be ensured of the right messages and ideas are being conveyed to children through a variety of means

In this run, a play school in Gurgaon can be a great help to you, which helps your child to stay engaged and learn new opportunities without a fail.

You can reach the Best preschool in Gurgaon, that is none other than Sixth Elements School.
