Future of schooling- The Sixth Element School

Innovation is a buzz today - with fast paced change in technology & disruptions in business/organizations  now endemic the 4th industrial revolution, is on !

Everything is changing - volume has gone up exponentially &  is freely available (on tap) online & as a result lots of innovation is on ; and it seems as though nothing is the same anymore…new organisations(start-ups)/products/versions are launched every few months (from years/decades earlier)…and simply put innovation & change is all around us - and we are living in the information age...with data/information/ opportunity to learn easily accessible all around us.

While knowledge has become a commodity- the need for continuous learning is even more necessary today, as learning needs to become a habit to deal with all of this change around us. So learning needs to become a  joy & not a pain to endure.

So should education & schooling remain “as is “or should schools & schooling practices change with all this change in this new era?

the answer to this important question is both a  “yes” and a  “no”.

consider browsing this independent thought provoking article here  that summarizes some of the changes on some aspects of schooling that are needed  in our schools.  These include
(i)            rote learning,
(ii)          end of term marking & evaluation system,
(iii)         respect for broader learning across all streams including sciences & arts,
(iv)         system of tuition classes and
(v)          the dislike that many kids usually have for school

While kids love theme parks & adventure rides, where they often experience & learn new things, why can’t school also be a place where they are enjoying & experiencing new learning every day?  Learning is natural urge in any human being born - but most schools do a great job in making learning a pain & making children dislike learning..

Hence the need to make schooling a joy & learning enjoyable.

While the joy of learning approach to education is great - the same needs to be equally tempered and buttressed with building the following core competencies & behaviors - as they build the very foundation:
1.    values, ethics & character
2.    discipline & perseverance
3.    respect for environment & sustainability
4.    risk taking ability & the spirit of adventure
5.    enjoying self-learning & capability of lifelong learning.

Impactful future ready schools need to thus provide the intellectual, creative & green ecofriendly physical infrastructure to catalyze the above - and a good school needs to be an institution that children look forward & are inspired to go to, every day!

The teacher is critical as the guide and inspirational role model & coach - who catalyzes amongst other aspects self-learning in students - and class room is a forum, for not academic knowledge dissemination, but a place to reflect, learn deeper aspects, gain insights -by engagement, reflection, discussion, debate, to build a solid foundation & core life skill strengths, which will be useful in the future, when areas like robotics, 3D printing, artificial intelligence, block chains, machine learning, etc will be common place.

All of this also needs to be reinforced with development in the playground (i.e. via sports), repeated testing in a competitive setting (to develop the spirit of excellence & the joy of winning), creative endeavors (to develop respect for the arts), social impact projects (to develop the desire to give, compassion & humility) as well as by influences at home with the family.

Here’s an interesting article published in CNN illustrating a few case studies on schools of the future.

Are these the schools of the future?

So apart from core baseline academia curated by inter alia above practices, sports (for individual excellence, perseverance & teamwork), extra-curricular activities; parent(s) & family, green ecofriendly environment, amongst many others influence,  shape the strength, character, capabilities & competencies of the child - which anchor their onward journey & development, preparing them to navigate the challenges of tomorrow & succeed in the emerging era.
